The Importance of a Healthy Mindset

See my 'Being Kind to Yourselfblog post

When battling chronic illness, one of the most important things to keep in mind is your mindset. The way you talk to yourself matters, and the way that you talk about yourself matters. Constantly saying "I'm a mess." or "I'll be like this forever." is only reaffirming that you are incapable of healing. We're all guilty of doing this and it's hard not to. Do I think that your symptoms are in your head and you can control them? Of course not. However, I know the mind-body connection is a powerful one.  Set aside time for self-care whether that means a hot bath or watching your favorite movie, but also set aside time for a challenge. This might mean going for a walk or hanging out with a friend or loved one. Things that still bring you joy but may not be as easy right now.

How to speak kindly to yourself:

  • don't refer to yourself as damaged or broken

  • give positive affirmations "I am enough." "I am capable of healing" "Wellness is finding me"

  • assume good intentions from your body (don't expect the worst)

  • leave space for sadness -it's important to feel what you're going through but don't allow it to be your only feeling.

Empower
Yourself

When your burdens get too big to carry promise yourself, you’ll keep going. Make a list of reasons not to give up and promise yourself you'll see this through.I know what it feels like to have the weight of chronic illness, suffocating you, your social life, your independence, and your entire world. I’m not saying there won’t be ups and downs. I’m not saying you won’t fail. But I am saying that there’s a purpose to the pain. So stay, and stay loudly.
